Follow one of our hives

One of the hives in our apiary in Asarum stands on a hive scale that weighs it around the clock. Here you can see the bees at work in real time – when plants are in bloom and the nectar flow is on, the hive gets heavier day by day.

Here you can see the hive “breathing”: during the day the foragers fly out and the weight drops, in the evening they come home with nectar. At night the weight falls slowly as water evaporates from the nectar.

How to read the chart

On a good flow day a strong colony can gain several kilos. At night the weight drops a little as the bees dry the nectar into honey and the water evaporates. When it rains or is cold, the bees live on their stores and the weight slowly goes down. Big jumps up or down usually mean we have been working the hive – for example adding a honey super or harvesting honey.
